Actual WaPo.com headline: Rice Favors 'Practical Idealism'

WTF does that mean?

I think I'll ask my wife what she thinks of monogamous adultery and that the next time Colin hang out we'll celebrate with abstemious dissipation...

Pentagon Blocks Release of Abu Ghraib Images: Here's Why

Tuesday, July 26, 2005

I'm not a big Kristoff fan but...

he's right that countless deaths just might be a bigger story than whatever Tom Cruise is up to.

Don't get me wrong, it's quite entertaining to see what a nutjob Tom Cruise is but, can we not expect the least pretense from the media that they want to inform us about, you know, things like genocide. Not that that's the only more important story in the world, but compare the coverage of Darfur to the coverage of Terry Schiavo.

Chilling Quote

That I happened to find on a random website containing many interesting photos of Alaska.:

"Why, of course people don't want war...Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war, neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor, for that matter, in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a parliament or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

Southern Repub Racism

Bush still refuses to go to the NAACP but sent his RNC Chair to attempt an appolgy for the "southern strategy". Herbert of the NYT hits the nail on the head on this issue today.

A must read

For those following Rovegate and the folly that is this war in Iraq then Rich's piece in the NYTimes is a must read.

Well, now I feel safer

I understand the rationale that terrorist can exploit grey and black markets to finance their activities, much like any other criminal group. However, I'm ver suuspicious of the priority accorded to this particular deployment of the Department of Homeland Security. Forgive my cynicism, but my impression is that this is more about diverting dollars that could be spent to better secure our nation's well documented vulnerabilitys to protecting the profit margins of large corporations.

Again, I can see how this could be important on the periphery of the war against terror, but in view of current circumstances I have to conclude that this is a misappropriation of our country's security resources for the benefit of corporate special interests.

Microsoft is evil

Not exactly breaking news, but as a member of the highly esteemed community of bloggers (even if I'm not particularly highly esteemed myself), I thought that whoever reads this thing might also be interested in reading the following:

Hello?

Should Catholics accept the theory of evolution?

I guess they should, but unfortunately our resident Catholic has been mute lately. Does anyone (who reads this blog) know what's going on with Colin?

Daily Kos: Supreme Court: What You Can Do RIGHT NOW

Daily Kos: Supreme Court: What You Can Do RIGHT NOW

Follow the link; follow the instructions;

hell, follow the money for what it's worth....

Time for nuclear war (figuratively)

Justice O'Connor to retire.

It wouldn't have made much of a difference if Rhenquist were to retire and be replaced by another conservative hack. However, O'Connor has been a crucial swing vote. Most notably, she provided the majority that protects a woman's right to make her own medical decisions. If the right gets its way, her replacement could pave the way for James Dobson, Karl Rove and Tom Delay to dictate to women what they can and cannot do.
